Will Flow work in my apartment building or multi-family home?
Flow will work in apartment buildings or multi‑family homes as long as:
-
There is one water meter per unit.
Flow measures consumption directly from the physical meter, so each unit needs its own meter for accurate reporting. -
The water meter is compatible with Flow.
Flow is compatible with the vast majority of residential mechanical water meters found in North America.
Flow works by sensing the magnetic pattern generated by the meter’s internal rotating disc.
To ensure compatibility:
- Flow must be able to physically attach to the meter using its mounting strap.
- The meter must have a rotating magnetic element, which most standard mechanical meters do.
- Extremely old meters, smart meters with fully electronic sensing, or uncommon specialty meters may not be compatible.
If you’re unsure whether your meter is compatible, simply take a photo of your meter and send it to our support team — we’ll confirm compatibility for you.
Shared Meters
If multiple units share a single meter, Flow will still detect and record water usage.
However, Flow cannot differentiate which unit the water came from because all usage passes through the same meter.
In this case, Flow reports the total water consumption for the shared line.
Flow’s advanced analytics features rely on per‑unit metering and therefore are only supported when each unit has its own meter.
